During Panther powerhouse years in the late 1950s, Mike was the "go to" receiver. In the game against North Central as a senior, he hauled-in eight of the ten passes thrown by WHS - about the same ratio of total receptions he posted for the season. The "speedy" 5'11", 160-lb. pass grabber had the ability to turn short tosses into long gainers and during two years as a starter, set school records for all-time and season receptions and yards. Mike was also a standout defensively. A "second team All-NCW A League" selection as a junior, because the Panthers primarily played an independent cross-state schedule his senior season, no WHS players were eligible for league honors. He was a co-captain for the 1959 grid team.
On the basketball court, Mike was a starting forward as a senior and 'sixth man' as a junior for the 1959 state tournament team. During those two seasons, the Panthers compiled a 33-12 record. He was a team co-captain as a senior.
Mainly a hurdler, Mike was a top point earner for the Panther track squad for three years and finished second to the eventual state champion at districts in the low hurdles as a senior. Mike earned a total of seven letters and also served as student body treasurer.
He went on to play for the University of Washington freshman basketball team.
