Ron starred as an athlete for Coulee City High School before going on to become a first team All-American selection for Eastern Washington in 1977 and a third team pick in 1976. He established Eastern's career records for points (1,741), rebounds (1,273) and field goal percentage (62.9). The powerful post-man averaged 16.4 points and 12.0 rebounds during his career. Eastern teams were 77-30 (.720) in the four-years he played (1974-77) and led the team in scoring and rebounding each season.
