Hawkins excelled in three sports for Brewster High School - baseball, basketball and football. He was an all-state selection on the diamond and three-time all-league infielder. As a senior on the basketball court, Hawkins was all-state '1A', NCW Player-of-the-Year for all classifications, league Player-of-the-Year, all-league, and averaged 23.5 points per game while leading the Bears to the state '1A' title. Brewster also won the state basketball championship his junior year as he was named all-league as well as to the second all-NCW team. On the gridiron, Hawkins was an all-state '1A' wide receiver, all-NCW, and all-league while catching 58 passes for 623 yards and 10 touchdowns as a senior. The prior season, he was all-league quarterback with completions for 1,433 yards. Hawkins was a finalist for North Central Washington Sports Awards High School Male Athlete honors twice and was selected as the NCW Prep Male Athlete-of-the-Year in 2005.
He had an outstanding college career as a baseball player at Biola University in California. Hawkins was an all-Golden State Athletic Conference second baseman while either leading, or ranking among leaders, in several batting categories including averages of .426 as a junior and .344 as a senior. He combined that consistent hitting with power that generated team leading totals of 13 and 15 homeruns and 59 and 53 rbi's his final two seasons. Hawkins was a finalist for NCW Sports Awards College Male Athlete three times.
Drafted by the Seattle Mariners, he played minor league baseball.
